Arthritis is generally referred to as joint disease or joint pains. It is most commonly suffered by women but frequently found in older people. The tendency of this disease may stay about the same for years or gradually mutate and will worsen over time.

From the ancient Sanskrit Ayurvedic texts, it is analysed that there are two basic types of arthritis which is as follow,

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (Ama Vat)
  • Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata)

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis predominantly found in Indians, affecting a population range of 15 million every year. OA is also referred to as “degenerative joint” disease characterised by joint pain, knee pain and inflammation. Osteoarthritis is usually developed after the age of 45 but juvenile osteoarthritis has also emerged as a growing concern.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is generally considered as a disease of malnutrition from an Ayurvedic perspective, that affects the vulnerable joints of the body. These reasons for the joints becoming vulnerable are due to various reasons such as anything from previous infections, injuries or congenital reasons.

Arthritis treatment in Ayurveda is effective in treating these problems. Also, this treatment not only prevents further deterioration in the joints but also rejuvenates damaged cartilages. Vata-alleviating medicines for Osteoarthritis are also suggested for osteoarthritis to lubricate and strengthen joints. Our ayurvedic treatment of osteoarthritis procedure commences with identifying the root cause (Nidaan), the treatment is customized for individual patients according to Nidaan.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis (known as Amavata in Ayurveda) is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation and severe pain in joints. It can also affect the tissue around the joints, as well as in other organs in the body such as eyes, kidneys, heart, and lungs by causing inflammation. As Rheumatoid Arthritis, or Amavata has the capacity of affecting the multiple other organs, it is referred to as a systemic illness and is sometimes called rheumatoid disease.

The causes of Vata aggravation includes high stress and anxiety, sleeplessness, traumatic events that affect us both mentally and physically, excessive movement and stimulation.

Some of the causes of aggravated Pitta include high levels of stress, vigorous levels of exercise beyond your capacity. Physical trauma (such as a severe car accident), and Psychological trauma (such as excessive stress or intense grief).

Tips when you have arthritis problem:

Everyday routines:

  • Pay attention to your joints, whether sitting, standing or engaging in activity.
  • Keep your joints moving. Do daily, gentle stretches that move your joints through their full range of motion.
  • Use good posture. A physical therapist can show you how to sit, stand and move correctly.
  • Know your limits. Balance activity and rest, and don’t overdo. In addition, lifestyle changes are important for easing pain.
  • Maintain your body weight. Obesity can elevate the complications of arthritis and worsen the pain level. Leveraging the lifestyle in an incremental and permanent manner will result in gradual weight loss.
  • Quit smoking. Because smoking causes stress on connective tissues, which can increase arthritis pain.

Exercise:

When you have arthritis, regular movement can reduce your pain and stiffness, improve your range of motion, strengthen your muscles, and increase your endurance.

What to do?

  • Make sure that you choose the right kinds of activities — build the muscles around your joints but do not damage the joints themselves. A physical or occupational therapist can help you develop an exercise program that is right for you.
  • Focus on stretching, range-of-motion exercises and gradual progressive strength training. Include low-impact aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling or water exercises, to improve your mood and help control your weight

What to avoid?

Avoid activities that involve high impact and repetitive motion, such as:

  • Running
  • Jumping
  • Tennis
  • High-impact aerobics
  • Repeating the same movement.
